Jhankaar School of Dance

Jhankaar, “the sound of bells”, has been heard in Winnipeg since 1995.

Instituted by Usha Sharma, a noted teacher and choreographer with an international reputation, the school offers instruction in tabla and the Jaipuri gharana of Kathak, with elements of Benares and Lucknow styles. A contemporary gurukul, Jhankaar follows the traditional ‘guru-sishya’ regimen of training. This methodology complements the school’s focus on technical precision and rhythmic attunement. Selected senior dance students are eligible to join the Manohar collective. Dance classes in both classical styles are offered for all ages and at all levels from Beginner to Advanced, with small groups and individual attention, and a structured curriculum that meets rigorous international standards. Four years ago, Jhankaar achieved the distinction of being the only school in Canada to receive accreditation from the renowned Prayag Sangeet Samiti institution of Allahabad, India. This accreditation allows Jhankaar to confer degree equivalents in Indian dance and music. Many of Jhankaar’s students, in Winnipeg and across Canada, hold Senior Diplomas in Kathak Performance.

Classes follow a semester system that starts in September, and runs in three-month terms. Most dance classes are scheduled on weekends, with tabla classes and specialized dance instruction on weeknight evenings by pre-arrangement. Jhankaar presents its students at an annual year-end Recital, as well as age-appropriate appearances at Folklorama and other festivals.
