Malavika is a talented Bharatanatyam dancer, trained by Guru Lalitha Srinivasan at Nupura School of Bharathanatyam in Bangalore, India. She has also studied different genres of Indian dance including Kuchipudi with Gurus Vyjayanthi Kashi and Pasumarthy Venkateswara Sarma; Odissi with Guru Sahana Das; and Indian folk dances as a part of the NADAM Folk Ensemble in Bangalore. Malavika was a part of the faculty at Nupura and won the Nupura Award in 2002. With a firm grounding in classical dance and the desire to explore new boundaries, Malavika has ventured into choreography in Indian contemporary dance and co-choreographed the productions Basant, Meghmalhar, Vande Mataram and Panchabhoota. She has conducted workshops for jazz students at Victoria School of Performing Arts, Edmonton, and was the production assistant for ‘Rangoli’ at Usha Kala Niketan, Edmonton. Malavika is the Artistic Director of Natyam Dance Academy in Edmonton. A regular performer in the Edmonton area, she featured at the 2007 Expanse Movement Arts Festival with her own conceptualization ‘Temple to Theatre’; and at Mile Zero Dance with ‘Enchantress’. Recently, she toured UK, Canada and USA with the Nupura dance troupe.
